Man Will Be Retried because of Online Comment
The 2016 death of Glenara Bates, who was 2 years-old at the time, was deemed a horrific event by any who heard about it.
The toddler’s demise was caused by blunt force trauma and starvation after her father, Glen Bates, beat her repeatedly with a belt and made her sleep on the floor of a bathroom. She had bruises, scars and other injuries covering her fragile frame.
After a trial, Bates was given the death penalty for his actions. However, the Ohio Supreme Court is giving him a retrial. The reason? One juror had answered a “racist” question online at some point in their lives.
In particular, the juror was found to have agreed with the statement that black people “are more violent than other races or ethnic groups” and that she felt uncomfortable around black people.
While we vehemently disagree with these statements, one has to wonder what this does to both free expression and our future legal system. First, free speech allows expression that is not liked, or even found abhorrent.
Second, is this how our legal system will be from now on? Where criminals are let off after a guilty verdict anytime a lawyer scours someone social media profiles to find something they can call “non-inclusive” or that represents an unpopular opinion?
The main question is: what about the victim? A 2 year-old girl who went through such a terrible ordeal deserves better.
Another gig economy company is testing out the public waters. This time it is delivery service DoorDash, who recently quietly put through paperwork to go public. There’s no way I would invest in the company at this time. For one, think back to the other gig economy companies who went public. Uber and the like seemed like a good bet until they opened their books and everyone saw that their profit came literally from exploiting and misclassifying employees (DoorDash is even seen as worse than most, given that the company took all employee tips for itself until uproar caused it to change 6 months ago). Another issue is that they are entering a crowded space, with other apps such as Postmates and Uber Eats offering the same service. There’s also the legal issue, with laws such as California’s AB5 being enacted that will make companies like this reclassify their workers as employees, instead of the independent contractor status they have been abusing for years. This doesn’t even get into the fact that, with coronavirus fears looming, it’s a bad time for any company to go public. Overall, until things iron out, it’s best to stay away from this offering.
Mandatory Paid Leave Worse for Workers?
Proponents of government regulation and intervention (i.e. liberals) always talk of making businesses give paid leave, in particular for female workers who get pregnant. However, is this a benefit for lower income females? Studies are showing no. Like most liberal policies, it seems to only favor upper class women (even though, every time, they claim they are doing it for the struggling lower class). This is because, when forced to give paid leave, businesses have to change the composition of their employees’ total compensation and reduce take-home pay to make up for the cost of paid leave. It’s also shown that when women learn of this trade off, they are no longer supportive of the idea. Which leads to the question: why do liberals want to hurt women so much?
The Madness Continues
In the U.K., thought police are busy at work! A man contacted 25 year-old Ria Cooper, who was the country’s youngest transgender person 10 years ago, on WhatsApp. He was an unknown photographer who wanted to have sex with Ria on camera and sell the tape. However, when he found out she still had male genitalia, he backed out. What did Ria do? Call the police on him for committing a transphobic hate crime, which the police are now investigating. Apparently, having sex with a stranger is good, while choosing not to be with a transgender person is bad, and perhaps illegal? On a side note, the U.K.’s violent crime rate rose by 19% last year. One wonders if they had perhaps focused on real crime instead of this tripe, it might just be less?
The Libertarian View of Immigration
Between Trump’s desire to stop most immigration and Bernie’s desire to give all illegal immigrants free healthcare, lies the libertarian view. Most views should be a middle ground, especially in such a diverse country. The libertarian view is that immigrants should not be criminals (unless they actually are criminals) due to the immigration process being so difficult, but would support less open borders if made easier for people to immigrate legally. Their website states, “People who would like to follow the legal procedures are unable to because these procedures are so complex and expensive and lengthy. If Americans want immigrants to enter through legal channels, we need to make those channels fair, reasonable, and accessible.” Agree or disagree, at least one party is striving to maintain the “United” part of the “United States of America.
