Matthew B. Murphy III is a thriving entrepreneur and business professional operating out of Indianapolis Indiana.
As a recognized industry leader Matthew is a recipient of the Coalition of Minority Business Development and Indy Chamber’s William Henry Entrepreneurial Achievement Award, and the Center for Leadership Development Minority Achievement Award in Finance.
After graduating the Kelley School of business, Matthew pursued a wide range of professional opportunities for a number of companies including Mays Chemical Co., Inc., BWI, LLC, and Huntington National Bank. Matthew was also appointed as an Indiana governor’s Trustee, where he helped oversee the Indiana Health Facility Financing Authority, Indiana State Teachers’ Retirement Fund, Public Employee Retirement Fund of Indiana, and INvestED. He has also been named as a Director to the Community First Bank Board of Directors.
In 2009, he established his current venture, Emboss Partners, LLC and is committed to helping small businesses and not-for-profit organizations obtain the necessary resources to promote long-term growth.
1. What do you currently do at your company?
I am the founder of Emboss Partners, LLC, which is a financial firm based out of Indianapolis, Indiana. We mostly aid small businesses and non-profit organizations in securing adequate funding to grow their bottom line. Essentially we facilitate comprehensive strategies to help these businesses manage their cash flow.
2.What was the inspiration behind your business?
I have always loved the business landscape and the many challenges I encounter on a weekly basis. You need tough skin and it is definitely not for everyone. My daily routine is dynamic and fast paced. My day-to-day tasks require a high degree of problem solving skills, but I enjoy the exciting aspect of my career.
When I was quite young I would watch my father work. He owned a small enterprise and his commitment to his field ultimately inspired me to pursue my own venture.
3. What defines your way of doing business?
I would have to say that above all I am a people person and our daily operations are based on the needs and requirements of our clients. I value open communication and we ensure optimal results by first listening and then executing a comprehensive plan of action.
4. What keys to being productive can you share?
This is a difficult question because I do not believe that there is a specific framework when it comes to being productive. What may work for someone may not work for someone else. For me, I find that open communication and taking the time to de-stress, fuels my mental health and in turn enhances my productivity. However, my suggestion for those looking to increase their work ethic would be to figure out what works for you and then schedule your daily tasks accordingly.
5. Tell us one long-term goal in your career.
I would have to say to further expand our reach in terms of clients. Our long-term goal is growth, and I am excited for any future opportunities that come my way.
6. How do you measure success?
Everyone defines success differently. While I am definitely fortunate for the amount of professional success I have had since establishing Emboss Partners in 2009, I am most thankful that I get to do what I love. I enjoy interacting with other businesses and like-minded professionals on a daily basis.
7. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned through the course of your career?
I would have to say that the biggest lesson I have learned throughout the course of my career is to be true to yourself and to not undervalue my work. In my earlier days I tended to under price my services, but I have since grown significantly. As one of the best in the business I have come to realize that people will pay for premium services as long as you are providing value.
8. What advice would you give to others aspiring to succeed in your field?
Networking has helped me establish myself and my business significantly. If you are new to the business world then I suggest finding a mentor – someone to help guide you through the complexities of the industry. I would also recommend attending networking events. Events are one of the best ways to get your name out there and connect with other professionals.
9. What are some of your favorite things to do outside of work?
Outside of work I do my best to de-connect from my professional role. I enjoy spending time with friends and family and I also like to make time for myself. I also make time to pray daily. I believe that my journey is influenced by the connectivity with a higher power.
10. What are a few influential books you’ve read and/or websites you keep up with that you’d recommend
My answer will always be the Bible. It is a constant source of inspiration for me and it serves as a guide through challenging times. I am always counting my blessings.
